Michigan State University (MSU) seeks a dynamic, collaborative, and forward-looking leader to serve as the next dean of its internationally renowned Broad College of Business (Broad). The dean will join at an opportune time to partner with new university leadership and engage students, faculty, staff, alums, and other key constituents in helping the college reach new heights by further enhancing our brand, the reputation of our people, and the rankings of our programs. The Broad College of Business, named after alumnus and distinguished business leader Eli Broad, is one of the largest of seventeen degree-granting colleges at Michigan State with approximately 4,900 students across 6 academic units – Accounting and Information Systems, Finance, Management, Marketing, Supply Chain Management, and the School of Hospitality Business. Its world-class faculty delivers academic rigor in the classroom and its leading-edge scholarship brings fresh perspectives to business leadership and best practices. With the No.1 ranked Supply Chain Management program, the No.3 ranked Production/Operations Management program and most other programs in the top 25, the college is a hub for top-ranked undergraduate and graduate programs that educate and nourish the next generation of business leaders. The Broad College is home to the Minskoff Pavilion, a 100,000-square-foot facility that provides state-of-the-art instruction, learning, and career development spaces for business students. The ideal candidate must have a demonstrated record of fundraising, strategic leadership in higher education and the skills required to oversee a large, complex college. The person should have excellent communication skills and the ability to work effectively and build meaningful relationships across multiple constituencies. They should be a leading scholar and must possess a terminal degree and academic credentials that merit appointment with tenure at the rank of professor in one of the college’s departments. Alum/advisory board members serve as ambassadors to the wider business community and bring their special talents, experience, and insights to Broad. The incoming dean reports to the provost and will be an integral and vital part of MSU’s leadership team. They should serve as an effective advocate on behalf of the Broad College and act as its chief academic and administrative officer. The dean will be a champion of the college’s mission, advance and implement its strategic priorities, cultivate meaningful partnerships, generate resources in support of the college’s priorities, and manage the college’s operations. Consistent with the recommendations of AACSB, the college’s accrediting body, the Broad College collects comprehensive and rigorous student success metrics that demonstrate faculty and staff’s commitment to excellence in business education. The college boasts a 98% graduation rate within six years and a 98% placement rate. The Broad College is also the most sought-after college at MSU. More than 20% of the incoming students plan to join the Broad College. As this level of interest continues to grow, the next dean will be expected to ensure that the college has sufficient resources so that student experiences and outcomes remain strong. The next dean must have a demonstrated record of supporting and promoting faculty excellence and providing a leadership approach that utilizes all the skills and expertise within the college. They should foster and manage an academic environment that facilitates the recruitment, retention, and development of exceptional faculty; support and reward fixed-term faculty and academic specialists who play an indispensable role in student education and training; and proactively work to ensure a diverse faculty composition. This individual should have a record of effectively using existing resources and identifying new resources that will support the work of faculty and enhance the reputation of the college. Engage alums and external partners. Business education at the Broad College extends well beyond the classroom. The college benefits from a passionate and supportive alums base, who are actively involved in mentoring students, providing insights about the skills and knowledge sought by employers, and supporting the college with generous gifts and donations. The Eli Broad College of Business Advisory Board comprising of over 20 C-level executives, helps to cultivate and encourage continuing affiliation between alums and the institution. The next dean will be expected to effectively engage alums and other external partners to understand their needs, aspirations for the college, and insights about the business world. Bridging the worlds of researchers and alums, the dean should be a passionate advocate for the college and demonstrate the ability to build genuine and mutually beneficial relationships with alums, donors, and industry. Strengthen relationships and build bridges across campus. The faculty and staff of Broad College are dedicated to serving the research and educational mission of the university, which is rooted in its land-grant identity. The new dean will share that commitment and seize the opportunity to build partnerships across the university while championing the best interests of the college. They will join a community of deans from all seventeen colleges who meet regularly. These meetings allow not only for open communications about college and campus policies, but also open pathways to potentially productive inter-college collaborations in research, teaching, and outreach. For example, The Burgess Institute for Entrepreneurship & Innovation is housed in the Broad College of Business, providing programs, courses, and resources to foster an entrepreneurial mindset, create new ventures, and develop skills that set students apart in the job market. The Burgess Institute for Entrepreneurship & Innovation is home to the Minor in Entrepreneurship and Innovation and is the fastest-growing academic minor on campus. The new dean will promote and facilitate interdisciplinary collaborations across the university. The focus on relationship building comes at a critical time – as the university has entered a period of new leadership following several years of public turmoil.

Actively engage in strategic initiatives to generate new resources to support the Broad College. The achievement of the Broad College’s strategic aspirations will be enhanced by generating additional funding sources as well as expanding the diversity of revenue streams for the college (e.g., income-based programs, research grants, study abroad initiatives, and corporate partnerships). Good progress has been made over the years in generating new donors and donations (the current endowment is $250 million and annual giving for FY2023 was $9,250,230.81). The next dean will be expected to devote significant time and energy to furthering Broad’s culture of philanthropy, building partnerships, and raising new funds. There are particular opportunities for success here, such as the continued cultivation of the worldwide network of 86,715 alums from all of the college’s programs. In attaining this objective, the dean is supported by development professionals dedicated to the Broad College. As one of Michigan State’s “crown jewels,” the Broad College – led by its dean – will assume a prominent role in the university’s forthcoming capital campaign. Michigan State University Leadership

Dr. Thomas D. Jeitschko is a professor of economics who serves as the Interim Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs at Michigan State University. He transitioned into this role from serving as the Senior Associate Provost, overseeing the budgeting process of the Office of the Provost, provost’s office communications and events, Institutional Research, and Institutional Space Planning and Management, as well as the Apple Developer Academy with MSU in Detroit and the Student Information System transition project. Previous to that he was MSU’s Associate Provost for Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies and Dean of the Graduate School, after serving for several years as the Director of the American Economic Association Summer Program—a two-month, intensive pre-doctoral residential program that prepares talented undergraduate students from under-represented backgrounds for graduate work in economics and related fields. Dr. Jeitschko holds an advanced degree in economics from the University of Münster in Germany with a specialization in Economic History and a Ph.D. from the University of Virginia in 1995 with a specialization in Mathematical Economics. His research interests are in applied economic theory with concentrations in industrial organization, law and economics, and micro-economics more broadly. He has published in a wide variety of journals, including the American Economic Review, the International Economic Review, the European Economic Review, Games and Economic Behavior, Economic Theory, the Journal of Law, Economics, and Organization, and the Journal of Industrial Economics. He served as an associate editor of the Journal of Economic Behavior and Organization and the International Journal of Industrial Organization, and as an editorial board member of the Journal of Behavioral and Experimental Economics, in addition to holding several other editorial appointments. Prior to his current appointment at MSU, Thomas has held faculty positions at Royal Holloway College, University of London, and Texas A&M, as well as shorter appointments at Duke, Johns Hopkins, and Georgetown universities, and at Humboldt University in Berlin, Germany. Thomas has also worked at the U.S. Department of Justice in Washington, D.C. as an economist in the Antitrust Division where he was the lead economist on many investigations of mergers and potentially anti-competitive firm conduct. He has advised and consulted for States Attorneys General Offices throughout the U.S. concerning antitrust and consumer protection matters and has been retained by the U.S. Department of Justice as an expert. KEVIN M. GUSKIEWICZ, PRESIDENT-ELECT

Kevin M. Guskiewicz, a neuroscientist, academic leader and concussion researcher, was appointed president-elect of Michigan State University on Dec. 8, 2023, by the MSU Board of Trustees. A member of the University of North Carolina’s faculty since 1995 and founding director of the Matthew Gfeller Sport-Related Traumatic Brain Injury Research Center and the Center for the Study of Retired Athletes, Guskiewicz was appointed UNC’s Chancellor in 2019. He is a nationally recognized expert on sport-related concussions and maintains an active research portfolio serving as co-principal investigator on two multi-center research grants. He has published over 200 peer-reviewed papers in the areas of sports medicine and neuroscience. His team’s groundbreaking work has garnered numerous awards and has influenced concussion guidelines in the NFL and NCAA. In 2011, Guskiewicz received the prestigious MacArthur Fellowship for his innovative work on the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of sport-related concussions. In 2011, he convinced the NFL and NCAA to change the kickoff rule, which resulted in a 50% reduction in concussions on kickoffs. In 2013, Time magazine named him a Game Changer, one of 18 “innovators and problem-solvers that are inspiring change in America.” Guskiewicz earned a bachelor’s degree in athletic training from West Chester University, a master’s in exercise physiology/athletic training from the University of Pittsburgh and a doctorate in sports medicine from the University of Virginia. Born and raised in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, he and his wife Amy have four children: Jacob, Nathan, Adam, and Tessa.
