Opportunities and Expectations for Leadership
Support faculty research, teaching, and outreach efforts. The Broad College is comprised of world-class scholars who publish in the top journals in their fields and demonstrate a deep commitment to academic rigor and student success. The next dean must have a demonstrated record of supporting and promoting faculty excellence and providing a leadership approach that utilizes all the skills and expertise within the college. They should foster and manage an academic environment that facilitates the recruitment, retention, and development of exceptional faculty; support and reward fixed-term faculty and academic specialists who play an indispensable role in student education and training; and proactively work to ensure a diverse faculty composition. This individual should have a record of effectively using existing resources and identifying new resources that will support the work of faculty and enhance the reputation of the college. Engage alums and external partners. Business education at the Broad College extends well beyond the classroom. The college benefits from a passionate and supportive alums base, who are actively involved in mentoring students, providing insights about the skills and knowledge sought by employers, and supporting the college with generous gifts and donations. The Eli Broad College of Business Advisory Board comprising of over 20 C-level executives, helps to cultivate and encourage continuing affiliation between alums and the institution. The next dean will be expected to effectively engage alums and other external partners to understand their needs, aspirations for the college, and insights about the business world. Bridging the worlds of researchers and alums, the dean should be a passionate advocate for the college and demonstrate the ability to build genuine and mutually beneficial relationships with alums, donors, and industry. Strengthen relationships and build bridges across campus. The faculty and staff of Broad College are dedicated to serving the research and educational mission of the university, which is rooted in its land-grant identity. The new dean will share that commitment and seize the opportunity to build partnerships across the university while championing the best interests of the college. They will join a community of deans from all seventeen colleges who meet regularly. These meetings allow not only for open communications about college and campus policies, but also open pathways to potentially productive inter-college collaborations in research, teaching, and outreach. For example, The Burgess Institute for Entrepreneurship & Innovation is housed in the Broad College of Business, providing programs, courses, and resources to foster an entrepreneurial mindset, create new ventures, and develop skills that set students apart in the job market. The Burgess Institute for Entrepreneurship & Innovation is home to the Minor in Entrepreneurship and Innovation and is the fastest-growing academic minor on campus. The new dean will promote and facilitate interdisciplinary collaborations across the university. The focus on relationship building comes at a critical time – as the university has entered a period of new leadership following several years of public turmoil.
