LEAD WITH PURPOSE. EXCEL WITH BROAD.
Letter from Eli and Edythe L. Broad Dean David Souder
At the Broad College of Business, we work hard, work smart, and work together to cultivate excellence in the next generation of global business leaders. This year, that commitment has been reflected in every aspect of our work: in the classroom, in our research, and across the communities we serve. In this report, you will see how we strengthened our undergraduate experience through curriculum updates that prepare Broad Spartans to lead from day one. With earlier exposure to data analytics, cross- functional collaboration, and real-world application, our students are building both analytical fluency and career confidence. The new Broad360 framework connects
learning across the curriculum, tracking experiential milestones that help students translate classroom knowledge into practice. At the graduate level, innovation and flexibility continue to define our approach through the development of an online format of the MBA program for working professionals. Broad’s graduate portfolio meets students where they are and empowers them to grow their leadership and make an impact in real time. Our faculty continue to elevate Broad’s research reputation by tackling some of the most pressing challenges in business, from ethical AI and finance innovation to supply chain resilience. Thanks to the generosity of our donors, endowed faculty are fueling discoveries that shape industries and
and inclusive future. With Spartan spirit,

ENHANCE UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAMS & EXPERIENCE
WHERE AI MEETS EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING We have partnered with Breakout Learning, an innovative case-based platform powered by AI and faculty expertise, to transform the way students learn. Breakout Learning takes faculty-designed content and turns it into interactive cases that challenge students to analyze problems, commit to decisions, and defend their perspectives, which builds the confidence, adaptability, and communication skills employers value most. This partnership was made possible through a $1.25 million gift from Jay (B.A. Accounting ’82) and Jill (B.A. Psychology ’83) Craig, which expanded access to Breakout Learning to more than 1,200 Spartans. Students begin with professionally produced pre-work, such as podcasts and case materials, before engaging in group discussions, videos, and immersive decision- making activities. AI transcripts evaluate both group and individual contributions, offering targeted feedback to students while giving faculty clear insights into learning outcomes. This creates a powerful feedback loop that makes education more interactive, personalized, and effective. The Broad College is proud to be Breakout Learning’s premier partner, with faculty actively contributing to case development. Philanthropic support ensures that more Spartans can access these high-impact experiences, bridging the gap between classroom learning and real-world leadership. REMOVING BARRIERS: $1M SARTARELLI SCHOLARSHIP SUPPORTS FUTURE SPARTANS Just as the Craig family’s generosity has expanded access to hands-on learning, Dr. Jose “Zito” Sartarelli (MBA ’75, Ph.D. ’79) and his wife, Katherine, have made a transformative $1 million gift to support
Preparing Spartans to lead from day one
EXPERIENCE-DRIVEN LEARNING FOR BROAD SPARTANS
Broad is continually reimagining undergraduate education to ensure that students graduate prepared to lead in a dynamic business world. Recent curriculum updates embed stronger technical and analytical training, create a common foundation across disciplines, and introduce more intentional career preparation. By shifting the degree from a Bachelor of Arts to a Bachelor of Science, we reinforced our historic commitment to analytical rigor while aligning with our highly ranked peer programs. Broad Spartans will also gain earlier exposure to data analytics and emerging technologies, learn how different business functions connect, and receive structured guidance on the transition from college to career. Experiential learning also plays a central role in these updates, giving students opportunities to apply classroom knowledge in internships, global programs, and co- curricular activities. These experiences help Spartans strengthen leadership skills, expand global perspectives, and build the adaptability that employers consistently seek. Anchoring this transformation is Broad360, powered by Suitable, which tracks and validates the Broad Integrative Experiences Requirement. Students must demonstrate mastery of six core competencies—culture and community, global mindset, ethics, leadership,
undergraduates in the Residential Business Community (RBC). Their commitment underscores how donor partnerships directly shape the student experience across the college. A native of Brazil and former Fulbright Scholar, Dr. Sartarelli earned both his MBA and Ph.D. at Broad before embarking on a remarkable career that spanned three decades in international leadership at Johnson & Johnson, Bristol Myers Squibb, and Eli Lilly. Later, he brought his global experience to higher education as dean at West Virginia University and chancellor at the University of North Carolina Wilmington, earning the Broad College’s 2024 Outstanding Alumni Achievement Award for his dedication to education and service. The Sartarelli Scholarship not only eases the financial burden for Broad students but also carries forward Dr. Sartarelli’s personal philosophy for success: “Work hard, build relationships, and give flight to imagination.” These guiding principles, which shaped his journey from graduate student to global business leader and university chancellor, will now empower the next generation of Spartans to follow their own paths with resilience and creativity.

philanthropy, and entrepreneurship—through progressive levels of engagement. Supported by units across the college, including the Palmer Career Management Center, Burgess Institute for Entrepreneurship and Innovation, and Office for Education Abroad, Broad’s award-winning partnership with Suitable ensures that every graduate has a robust and competitive portfolio of experiences.
BUILDING THE FUTURE OF FINANCE
PROFESSIONALLY PREPARED
FROM THE CLASSROOM TO THE C-SUITE
Now under construction, the Brigham Financial Analysis Laboratory will provide a hands-on environment where Spartans can strengthen financial modeling and analytical skills, incorporating classroom concepts into real-world application.
Employers want graduates ready to hit the ground running. Broad bridges the gap with a new course— Preparing for Professional Success: Transitioning from University to Career—that equips students with the skills and real-world readiness to thrive from day one.
The Dashney Women’s Leadership Accelerator’s inaugural cohort graduated this year, with the program designed to provide leadership skills, professional development, and subject expertise to help scholars succeed early in their careers and progress to executive leadership.

2025 DEAN’S REPORT
While the backgrounds and roles of each leader varied, a thread throughout each conversation was clear: The hallmark of good leadership is caring deeply about who you are leading and what you are leading toward. This course took the Executive MBA program beyond the classroom and encouraged each of us to reflect on our motivations for learning and leadership.”
ELEVATE GRADUATE PROGRAMS & EXPERIENCE Empowering professionals to transform careers and lead with impact

STRENGTHENING MBA OPTIONS We continue to evolve our graduate portfolio to meet the demands of today’s business landscape. We are in the process of launching a new Professional Online MBA format, a flexible option that delivers the same rigor and reputation of a Broad MBA in a fully online model. With 7-week modules, optional live sessions, and no travel required, students can tailor the pace of their degree to fit their professional and personal commitments. The program’s curriculum is designed to balance theory and practice, preparing graduates to make an impact immediately while building long-term leadership capacity. Students gain expertise across strategic management and analytics, leadership
development, accounting and finance, supply chain management, marketing strategy, and global business and innovation. These experiences ensure that Broad Spartans are equipped to lead teams, analyze data, navigate global challenges, and strengthen organizations in an era of rapid change. “This program reflects our commitment to preparing leaders who can adapt to change,” Wayne Hutchison, assistant dean of MBA programs, said. “Students can apply what they learn directly to their careers while developing the strategic perspective employers demand.” With this addition, we affirm the Broad College’s position as a leader in graduate education, expanding access while maintaining the excellence that defines a Broad MBA. CONNECTING SPARTANS WITH THE C-SUITE Broad has introduced a distinctive course in the Executive MBA program, Lessons in Leadership: Perspectives from the C-Suite. Developed and taught by Sanjay Gupta, Dean Emeritus, this course gives students an unparalleled opportunity to learn directly from top executives across industries, including many Spartan alumni, through fireside conversations and candid Q&A sessions. Discussions focus on real-world leadership challenges such as mergers, sustainability, governance, and values-based decision-making. Students are not only listeners; they are active participants who complete a personal leadership gap analysis and develop an individual leadership roadmap. This work encourages reflection, self-
awareness, and actionable plans for growth that extend far beyond the classroom. The impact is powerful. Students report that hearing from executives expanded their perspectives and challenged them to act with greater confidence and clarity. At the same time, executives valued engaging with the next generation of Spartan leaders, noting the quality of dialogue and curiosity in the classroom. By connecting students directly with the C-suite, this course underscores Broad’s commitment to experiential, high-impact graduate education and reinforces our reputation for preparing leaders who are ready to meet today’s most complex challenges.

AWARD-WINNING FACULTY
EXPAND RESEARCH EXCELLENCE & VISIBILITY Advancing knowledge and shaping global conversations in business
Ranjani Krishnan, associate dean of faculty and administration and the Ernest W. and Robert W. Schaberg Endowed Chair in Accounting, received the Seminal Contribution to Accounting Literature Award from the American Accounting Association for her co-authored paper, “Honesty in Managerial Reporting.” This prestigious award has only been bestowed 10 times in the past 40 years and recognizes works that have stood the test of time and have contributed in a fundamental way to later research.
Using a mixed-methods approach, Carter’s team integrates multiple lines of evidence to understand how networked teams function in high-stakes, distributed environments. They have analyzed NASA archival documents, interviewed mission control personnel, and conducted high-fidelity experiments linking MSU “mission control” student teams in the Kesseler Team Leadership Lab at Broad with volunteer “spaceflight crews” living for 45 days inside NASA’s Human Exploration Research Analog facility. Their findings reveal that trust built before launch, clear and simple communication, and consistent interaction are vital for maintaining coordination and shared focus throughout long-duration missions. By uncovering how teams cooperate and maintain shared focus under extreme conditions, Carter’s research is helping NASA prepare for the next era of deep-space exploration. BUILDING BROAD’S FUTURE THROUGH ENDOWED FACULTY World-class faculty are the foundation of our reputation for research excellence and transformative education. Endowed faculty positions made possible by donor generosity ensure that we can attract, retain, and support scholars who shape their fields and inspire our students. This year, Broad celebrated the appointment of the Alan J. & Sue Kaufman Endowed Professorship in Insurance, with Ryan Israelsen named as the inaugural holder. Alan Kaufman, group chairman and chief executive officer of H.W. Kaufman Group, has long been a champion of advancing insurance education, and this professorship reflects his enduring commitment to developing the next generation of leaders in the field. This appointment strengthens Broad’s leadership in insurance and risk management scholarship, expands opportunities for students to learn from top experts, and deepens our connections to industry partners. A $3.1 million gift from Curt Hilliker (B.A. Hotel and Restaurant Management ’88) will likewise advance faculty excellence in the School of Hospitality Business. Hilliker, a respected leader in the investment management industry, has remained deeply connected to MSU, and his generosity will fund an endowed chair, professorship, or fellowship, ensuring that generations of Spartans benefit from learning with the very best in the field. Together, these investments highlight the essential role donors play in fueling Broad’s academic strength. By supporting endowed faculty positions, our alumni and friends help elevate the visibility of Broad’s research, strengthen the student experience, and secure our place among the nation’s leading business schools.
watermarking that protects intellectual property and modeling consumer behavior to improve business decisions. Musaib Ashraf, associate professor in the Department of Accounting and Information Systems, examines AI’s impact on financial reporting, finding that automation strengthens internal controls but can increase risk when human oversight is removed. These are just a few of the Broad College researchers exploring AI’s potential and implications across disciplines. Collectively, their work reinforces Broad’s leadership in guiding the responsible evolution of AI, ensuring technology serves business and society with integrity, fairness, and purpose. BROAD RESEARCH POWERS MISSION TO MARS Dorothy Carter, associate professor of management at Michigan State University, is helping shape the future of human spaceflight. As part of a NASA-funded research initiative, Carter and her collaborators are uncovering how astronaut crews and Earth-based mission control teams can stay connected, resilient, and effective on missions that will take humans farther into the solar system than ever before. Carter’s research focuses on three core questions: How is collaboration likely to evolve during a mission to Mars? What conditions, such as trust, cohesion, and collective attention, are essential for team success? And what countermeasures are needed to support those essential conditions?
10 CONSECUTIVE YEARS OF RESEARCH EXCELLENCE
LEADING THE WAY IN RESPONSIBLE AI Our faculty are driving research that ensures artificial intelligence is developed and applied responsibly, ethically, and with real-world impact. While AI continues to reshape industries, Broad scholars are working to make that transformation equitable, transparent, and human-centered. Among them, Anjana Susarla, the Omura-Saxena Professor in Responsible AI and faculty director of the Center for Ethical and Socially Responsible Leadership, is shaping national conversations on ethical and transparent AI systems, exploring how organizations can design technology that prioritizes accountability and fairness. Quan Zhang, assistant professor in the Department of Accounting and Information Systems, is advancing fairness and security in machine learning, from mitigating bias in automated decision-making to creating digital
The Department of Supply Chain Management has been ranked No. 1 in research by the SCM Journal List for 10 consecutive years, reflecting sustained excellence and global impact in analytical and empirical supply chain scholarship.

FOSTER COMMUNITY OUTREACH & BELONGING Creating opportunities and building inclusive communities that thrive together
CONNECTING THE WORLD THROUGH BROAD Each semester, we welcome an international alumnus to campus as a Global Engagement Fellow, strengthening our global ties and providing students with direct access to Spartan leaders with a worldwide footprint. In Fall 2024, Keiichi Higuchi (MBA ’83) returned from Tokyo to Michigan State, meeting with faculty and students, speaking on global supply chain and logistical innovation, and sharing how his Broad education enabled his leadership across continents. In Spring 2025, Diana Mejía (MBA ’00) joined Broad as our Global Engagement Fellow. Mejía, CEO and founder of Entirety LLC, leads a global market access firm operating across six countries. During her week on campus, she participated in Ethics Week, presented on global business strategies in tech, and held mentoring sessions with students about navigating cross-cultural leadership. What makes these fellowships so meaningful is the generosity of Broad Spartans who return to share their time and expertise. Their willingness to give back strengthens our community and reminds us that Broad’s reach extends across the globe. REMOVING BARRIERS THROUGH PARTNERSHIP The M.S. in Marketing Research and Analytics (MSMRA) program continues to lead the way in how higher education and industry can work together to achieve new levels of student excellence. At the 2025 Spartan Insights Summit, hosted by the MSMRA program, $15,000 in scholarships was awarded to graduate students, supporting their
CARING FOR THE WHOLE SPARTAN The Broad Care Center opened this year to ensure the Broad community has access to essential resources, food, hygiene products, and emergency supplies, free of charge. By removing barriers to wellness, the Care Center helps Spartans focus on their education and future. Led by coordinator Jessica Gray and shaped by student input, the Care Center was built to be simple and discreet. Faculty, staff, and students can place a mobile order or pick up items directly in the Eppley Center. Both options make it easy to get what is needed, when it’s needed. Supplies are provided through the generosity of Broad faculty, staff, programs, and alumni, As a student living off campus, it helps me save so much money knowing I can come and get full-sized cleaning items, snacks and other things for free. I can use that money elsewhere. I think it will be super helpful for upcoming juniors and seniors living off campus.”
