Student Experiences with Bias/Discriminaon Events

Students were asked a series of quesons about bias/discriminaon events they may have experienced in the college. Prior to being asked specific quesons, they were provided with the following definions: Bias is defined as showing a preference or tendency, conscious or unconscious, which can be for or against a person, group, or thing when compared to another. A bias incident is an incident of verbal or non-verbal conduct that is threatening, harassing, inmidang, discriminatory or hosle and is based on a category protected under the MSU An-Discriminaon Policy. Please also see the MSU An-Harassment Statement for more informaon. Students were first asked if they had felt discriminated against in their college over the past 12 months. A small percentage, 5.3%, answered affirmavely. All students, regardless of their responses to the general discriminaon queson, were asked to indicate whether they had experienced one or more of 14 different forms of discriminatory events in the past year. For each student who reported experiencing any of these events at least 1-2 mes, their responses were counted and coded into a single variable. Using this approach, 29.4% of students reported experiencing at least one form of discriminaon. Chart 2 illustrates the overall percentage as well as the breakdown by demographic group for both the general queson and the computed 3 variable. Chart 2.
